Most of us spend the majority of our waking hours at work, which makes it kind of funny to think companies are only recently coming around to the idea that people want to enjoy their workplace. The people, culture, and setting all make a huge difference in how we feel at work, and as business owners, it’s incumbent upon us to facilitate a great experience. After all, that goes directly to our bottom line, one way or another.
Increasing employee productivity by uniting around a good cause is an incredible way to refresh your employees perspective, get folks relating to one another around something other than deliverables, and finding a fulfilling connection to purpose and mission by giving back.
Many companies create campaigns, events, or physical challenges that their teams unite around, using competition as a fun vehicle for raising funds to support a great cause. That said, there are various ways to do it, but these concepts are really around the social fabric of our organizations, and that productivity is the result of trust and teamwork.
By creating opportunities for your employees to connect with each other around purpose and mission, the more they will do for each other, for you, and your company.

There are various websites that list and rate nonprofits, but GreatNonprofits.com has a wealth of resources, including search & review features that allow you to focus on organizations aligned with your companies work and personality.
Search there and vet your options.
It’s amazing how many dedicated people are working toward a better future through nonprofits and charities. Once you’ve looked them over, email a few of them to learn more about how they engage with corporate entities.
If you’re a creative company, perhaps an ad agency, PR, marketing, or design firm, you can reach out to organizations that provide art & music programs for schools. If you’re a food company, connect with your local food bank and see how they structure their volunteering and donation campaigns.
You can even let your employees vote on which charity they’d most like to support to ensure they are fully behind the mission! This is a cool way to measure buy-in and speak to why you are focused on earmarking some of the companies time and resources for these activities. As much as anything, creating an environment where your employees opinions matter means you’ll be reacting to real problems with solutions form folks who work on that every day.
It’s just smart business.
Trusting your employees to give you great feedback should extend to how your company shows up in the community as well.
